WIAA to ban booing? Let us know what you think.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the organization that governs high-school sports in Washington State, has drafted guidelines on unacceptable behavior that they hopes to implement throughout the state by the beginning of next school year. These guidelines ban booing, organized chants targeted at a single player, and other signs of disrespect.

Coach Tom Newell and Coach Guy Perry will discuss the proposed ban on in their Friday, March 8th podcast.  What do you think?  Let us know and we'll try to include it in the podcast.

Trying to ban booing is crazy!  Fans are part of the whole experience.  Kids need to learn to play through booing because if they go on to play college basketball, it will be there, as well.  Why would we coddle our kids from booing when it is a reality at the next level?  Besides, how would they regulate it?  There are way too many people at games to be able to do anything about it.

One thing that would help booing is to get more qualified refs that call a better game.  In girls basketball particularly, the refs are not as good.  During State, we watched both girls and boys games.  The boys refs are way more consistent and fair.  They, too, make bad calls, but they were at least consistent and reffed at a higher level.  The girls refs were terribly inconsistent and at times, seemed very unseasoned.  Better refs equate to better behaved fans.  Refs shouldn't give the fans anything to boo about.
